He volunteered for service in the Canadian army in World War I, enlisting under the name "Ralph Viking Rhodes" on December 13, 1915, in Winnipeg. However, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission of Great Britain has his name correct as Rolf Viking Rhode. He was a lance corporal in the 44th Battalion of the Canadian Infantry (New Brunswick Regiment)and was killed in France March 18, 1917, aged 24. He is buried in the Communal Cemetery in Barlin, France, Plot I, Row G, Grave # 23.

The back of the photograph of him in Canadian Army uniform reads: "Rolf Viking Rhode born the 22nd of November 1890 in St. Paul Minn came to Duluth with his parents in 1893 and where educated in McCommon school there in Emmerson and partly in normal school. Working for Mr F A Patrick & Co to 1911 then going west and to Canada enlisted in Winnipeg Man[itoba] in the Canadian Army as Lance Corporal Regimental No. 829753 going overseas Sept." The photograph probably was taken when he presumably took leave to visit his family in Duluth after training, between enlisting in December 1913 and September 1914. His Canadian Army records list him as 5 feet, 9 inches tall, with blue eyes, a fair complexion, and light hair. His religion is listed as Lutheran. Cause of death in the records is listed as "dangerously wounded."

He is listed in the Canadian "Book of Remembrance" for the First World War on page 315 under the name "Ralph Viking Rhodes." The Books of Remembrance list all the names of the Canadian soldiers who died in all wars, and are kept in a memorial in Ottawa.

"Died of wounds, March 19, 1917." was the entry made at Ottawa yesterday on the record of Rolf Viking Rhode, aged 25, a Duluth boy, who enlisted with a Winnipeg battalion last fall.
S. A. E. Rhode of 1225 West First street, father of the young man, was notified this morning of his son's death, by officers in the Ottawa office.
Although messages to the father from the Canadian war office have given no explanation as to where Rhode sustained the wounds which caused his death, it is believed he was wonded in France, during the advance of British troops over the miles of territory recently vacated by the German forces under Von Hindenberg.
On Monday Mr. Rhode was notified that his son had been dangerously wounded in the fighting on St. Patrick's day. He also was informed that he would be informed of any further developments. The second message arrived this morning.
The Canadian casualty lists stated that Rhode was an acting lance corporal at the time of his death. He enlisted at Montreal, according to his father.
Rhode was born in St. Paul and came to Duluth with his parents when a boy. He attended the public schools of this city, and later served an enlistment in the United States army.

He married Anna Margaret Wise 23 Aug 1910 in Duluth, Saint Louis, Minnesota. No known children.
