United States Navy Admiral. Born in Pennsylvania in 1809, he began his Naval career as a Midshipman from South Carolina in October, 1823. Commissioned Commander in February, 1854, he commanded the steam sloop Lancaster of the Pacific squadron in 1861. He was promoted Commodore in July, 1862 and was on special duty during the Civil War as an ordnance officer in Philadelphia until 1867. He was made a Rear Admiral in April, 1867 and commanded the North Atlantic squadron, until 1869. He retired from active service in 1870 and was president of the board of visitors at Annapolis.
