Published in the Piscataquis (ME) Observer 6 Dec 1877 p2: "Our Monson correspondent sends us the following particulars of the drowning of Mr. Rufus Drake of that place: We have to record the melancholy death by drowning of Mr. Rufus Drake of Monson. He was employed by Levi Flint to have charge of a logging operation at the West outlet, Moosehead Lake. For reasons not known, he left the crew on Monday morning, 2?th ult., and crossed a small pond on which three of them had stood the day before, but when on his return he broke through the ice and was drowned.

Appearances indicate that he struggled to regain footing upon the ice, as it was broken up for a distance of ten feet, and several of the crew heard shouts but supposed they came from the landing, which was not an unusual thing, they were not alarmed until Mr. Drake's absence led to a search and the pond showed his hat and axe and the scene of his last efforts to attract attention.

Deceased was forty-three years of age and has long been a respected citizen of Monson. He was the staff upon which his aged and widowed mother leaned and was peculiarly gifted to be her support and comfort. Yet she is able to say, 'The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away; blessed by the name of the Lord.'"
