John W. Van Name was born in Herkimer County, NY, August 20, 1819. His parents came to the western part of the town of Hamburg when he was six months old. He was educated in the schools of that day, and was a farmer until he retired in 1871, when he came to the village of Hamburg to reside. December 25, 1842, he married Lodema E. Partridge of Hume, Allegany county, NY and they had nine children; all are dead except Alonzo A. and Kate L. Lodema died June 13, 1895.

John's father, Aaron, was born in Dutchess county, NY in April 1791. He moved to Hermimer county when a young man and married Margaret Shawl. They had three children. He was a soldier in the war of 1812 and died in 1867; his wife in 1841.
