Alexander Atkinson Waldrop Jr., 85, of Roanoke, died Monday, December 13, 1999. Mr. Waldrop served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was a graduate of Jefferson High School Class of 1931, Hampden-Sydney College Class of 1935 and University of Virginia Law School Class of 1939. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, the Shenandoah Club where he was Secretary-Treasurer for many years, the Roanoke Country Club and the Rotary Club. Alexander was an avid golfer, and was a retired attorney. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alexander A. Sr. and Carolyn Bear Waldrop; his brother, John Waldrop; and his wife, Margaret Carper Waldrop. Surviving are his children, Margaret Waldrop Halley and her husband, James of Grafton, Alexander Atkinson Waldrop, III, Portland, Maine, Anne Wilson Waldrop, Charlottesville, George Stephens Waldrop, Roanoke, Jane Edmundson Waldrop, New York City; his grandson, Michael Patrick Halley, Grafton; his brother, Luke Waldrop, Salem. A funeral service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church Wednesday, December 15 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Thomas O'Dell officiating. Interment in Evergreen Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Alzheimer's Disease, Roanoke / Salem Chapter, 2728 Colonial Avenue, Suite 2, Roanoke, Va. or University of Virginia Alumni Association. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel where the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m.
