A native of North Carolina, he was the son of the late Daniel and Bertha Carawan and the widower of Betty Weatherly Carawan. He had worked as a superintendent in the construction business.
He is survived by four daughters, Brenda C. Gwaltney and husband Tucker of Elberon, Va., Debbie C. Martin and husband Mike of Avon, N.C., Bonnie Carawan- Yi and husband Donald of Corona, Calif., and Joy C. Barbee and husband Scott of Virginia Beach; three sons, T.J. "Cowboy" Carawan of Chesapeake, Harry "Ben" Carawan of Virginia Beach and Richard G. Carawan of Virginia Beach; six grandchildren, Heather, Harry, Dana, Courtney, Ricky and Jordan; and five great-grandchildren, Jackson, Morgan, Katelyn, Emma and Sean. He was also predeceased by his first wife, Martha Davenport Carawan.
A special thank you to the nursing staff of Virginia Beach Healthcare for the care he received over the past seven years.
A funeral will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, with the Rev. Tommy Taylor officiating. The burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
