Mrs. Barbara Ann Sheffer died suddenly at the home of her daughter, Mrs. T. G. Ryther, in Bellingham Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Sheffer had been in her usual health and on Sunday morning had taken advantage of the beautiful Easter day to enjoy a long walk. Returning to her daughter's home she ate lunch and went to her room. Soon after, Mrs. Ryther was attracted to the room and found her mother in a dying condition.

Mrs. Sheffer was 71 years and six months old. With her husband, Nicholas Vance Sheffer, to whom she was married forty-six years ago, she came to Bellingham from Missouri in the early days, they being among the first settlers in that part of the county. Mr. Sheffer died about five years ago. Mrs. Sheffer was of very gentle and uncomplaining disposition, and had many friends, in Lynden where she resided for several years, and in Bellingham and other parts of the county. She was the mother of twelve children, four of whom survive her. They are Mrs. Ryther, of Bellingham, Mrs. May Lang, of Port Townsend, Bert Sheffer and Joe Davis, both living in Idaho. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Lynden on Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. Herbert Jones officiating. Interment was in Lynden cemetery beside the bodies of her husband and daughter, Nicholas Vance Sheffer and Mrs. R. E. Hawley.

Mormon Pioneer Journey:
The Uriah Curtis Company (1852)

About 365 individuals and 51 wagons were in the company when it began its journey from the outfitting post at Kanesville, Iowa (present day Council Bluffs). Members of the company arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on 29 September and 1 October 1852.

Barbra's mother, Mary Lee BLAND Ewell, was age 34 when she crossed the plains with her 6 children after her husband William Fletcher Ewell had died from an illness. Mary also had a close and dear friend that she grew up with by the name of Mamie Chloe, who also traveled alongside Mary and her six children. Mamie Chloe was a African American Mormon pioneer lady, whom Mary loved dearly as Mammie helped Mary raise her six children. Mary and William Fletcher Ewell's children's ages are listed below upon departure to Utah:

(1)- Marion Francis Ewell age 16

(2)- John Pleasant Ewell age 14

(3)- Sarah Elizabeth Ewell age 11

(4)- Barbara Ann Ewell age 8
