He was the son of John Henry and the former Miss Elizabeth Jane Mills both born in Kentucky. He came to Texas to seek his fortune, and worked as a school teacher, cotton buyer and for much of his working life he was the President of the Crowdus Drug Company in Dallas. He married the oldest daughter, Miss Anna H Crowdus, of the former mayor of Dallas, Dr. J W Crowdus. Three children were born of this union. His family lived in Oak Cliff and he died of a sudden unexpected heart attack. He was survived by his wife and three children.
