Murdoch McDuffie was born in North Carolina. He was in Franklin County Georgia by 1826 when he married his first wife and the mother of all of his children, Margaret Chappelear. They lived in Georgia until shortly before 1850 and moved to Cherokee County Alabama.
We don't know his parents. In the 1830 census of Franklin County Georgia an Alexander McDuffie lived next to him. Just a couple of years separated their ages. He is likely a brother.
