John H. Sommer
John H. Sommer, 81, Cavalier, died Friday, April 4, at the Pembina County Memorial Nursing Home in Cavalier.
Mr. Sommer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Sommer, was born Sept. 7, 1898, near Cavalier. He was married to Lillian Kuschel at Sauk Rapids, Minn., on Feb. 26, 1922. She died Oct. 7, 1979.
He farmed near Cavalier until 1951 when he moved to Cavalier. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Cavalier, Superintendent of the Sunday School and an elder in his church for many years. He served in the North Dakota legislature from 1951 to 1955. He also served on the Hamilton township board, was vice president of the Pembina County Fair board and a charter member and chairman of the building committee of the Pembina County Memorial Hospital. He was also a leader of the Work and Win boys 4-H club.
He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Richard B. (Aryls) Timian; one son, Laverne Sommer, both of Cavalier; one granddaughter, Mrs. William (Susan) Stibbe, Hunter; and three grandsons, Curtis Sommer and Kevin Sommer, both of Fargo, and Tim Timian, Greeley, Colo.; three sisters, Mrs. Lawrence (Cora) Ault, Mrs. John (Marie) Unke, and Mrs. Albert (Bertha) Mosolf, all of Cavalier; and one brother, Ed Sommer, Cavalier.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his step-father and one sister.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 7, at 2 p.m. from Our Savior Lutheran Church, Cavalier, with Rev. Arnold Lueker officiating and interment was in the Cavalier Cemetery.
Acting as pallbearers were Darrell Brandt, Warren Hartje, Lawrence Heuchert, Myron Kemnitz, Tim Sommer and George Timian.
Arrangements were with Jensen Funeral Home of Cavalier.
