Dies at Age 83

Funeral services were held Monday morning at Elwood's First Methodist Church for Mrs. Carrie E. Tilson, 83, who died Friday afternoon [30 Sep 1977] at Elwood Care Center. She had been in failing health for several months.

Carrie Emma Leggott was born December 12, 1893, to George and Mary Carter Leggott in Gosper, Nebraska, a former community southwest of Elwood. One of seven children, Carrie attended Ash Grove rural school near Gosper and was a member of the Methodist Church there.

In 1905 she moved with her family to Elwood. She was graduated from Elwood High School with the class of 1909. In 1911 she transferred her membership to the Elwood United Methodist Church of which she was active in the women's organizations.

On January 22, 1913, Carrie was married to Clifford V. Tilson of Elwood. To this union were born four children: George, Mardelle, Russell and Rex.

For 37 years after their marriage the Tilsons lived on farms northwest of Elwood. In January of 1950 they retired from farming and moved to a new home in town. Clifford Tilson died March 29, 1969. Carrie had resided with her son, Russell, and daughter-in-law, Jane, of Elwood since 1971. This March she moved into the local Care Center.

Survivors include her son, Russell, of Elwood and daughter, Mardelle [Lierman] of Boulder, Colorado; three sisters, Alice Hall of Elwood, Annie Fish of Oxford, and Esther Frescoln of Winner, South Dakota; two brothers, Charles and Edward, both of Elwood; 15 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Carrie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Clifford; two sons, George and Rex; and one brother, Roy, and a sister, Mary.

Officiating at Monday's service was the Rev. James Moores. Music was provided by Ruth Tilden and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Yost. Pallbearers included Vaughn Leggott, Paul Tilson, Keith Leggott, Harold Elliot, Dale Fish and Harlan Gydesen.

Interment was in the Elwood Cemetery.
