James was a farmer, tanner and ship carpenter. He first lived in Camden working on the ships in the Rockland shipyard. Later he moved to South Hope, Maine and bought a farm. He farmed for 25 years there. He was a member of the Universalist Church. He later (1885) moved in with his son Aubert Alward in Rockland, being unable to farm any more.
