June Rose Crawford’s cremated remains were never taken after her death and are still available at Oregon State Hospital to be claimed by anyone who is related.

June’s parents were Ralph Quincy Crawford and Lena Wilhelmina Folkerts. They were both born in Missouri, Ralph in 1905 and Lena in 1906. They were married in July 1925. They had 3 children: Nelson (born in Missouri in 1925), and twins June Rose and Betty Jean (in Portland, Oregon in 1931). During the census of 1930 (before June was born) her parents and brother Nelson lived in Moniteau County, Missouri where Ralph worked with textiles.

June & Betty were born in Portland on 6/7/1931. On 9/2/1939 when she was 8 years old June was admitted to the Oregon State Fairview Home in Salem, Oregon. The Fairview Home was originally called the Oregon State Institution for the Feeble-Minded. It was a quasi-educational institution charged with educating people with developmental disabilities. In 1933 the facility was renamed Oregon Fairview Home and it was closed in 2000. June’s condition was described by the staff doctor as “idiocy,” a term commonly used at that time within the medical community. During the census of 1940, she was listed as an “inmate” at the Fairview Home. She was 9 years old and not receiving any education. Very few of the children at Fairview at that time were enrolled in a school program.

During the same (1940) census, June was also listed in the home of her parents on Baltimore Street in Portland. She had no educational training while Betty was in 2nd grade. Her father was a foreman at the Portland Woolen Mill and her mother was a weaver at the woolen mill. Lena's parents divorced between 1940 and 1942. On 9/2/1942 Lena married Forest Hardy Williamson in Oregon. They moved to California. Lena had another daughter several years later. In December 1942, June’s father married Mildred Dudley.

June lived at Fairview for 9 1/2 years and died of tuberculosis at the institution on 2/23/1949. TB was a serious problem in situations where large numbers of people were living in close quarters. Although there were some treatments for TB the true revolution didn’t begin until 1952, with the development of isoniazid, the first oral mycobactericidal drug. At the time of her death June was 17 years old. An autopsy was conducted. Her body was transported to the nearby Oregon State (Psychiatric) Hospital where she was cremated and where her ashes are being held.

June's mother Lena Williamson died in Eureka, California on 9/4/1963. Her husband Forest died in 1979. June’s father, Ralph, was married to Mildred at least through 1961. He married Violet Elizabeth Mather in 1968. Ralph died in Oregon in McMinnville, Oregon on 4/26/1988. June’s brother Nelson married Frances Nyborg in 1970 and they divorced in 1979. He died in Arizona on 2/20/1994. June’s twin Betty married Henry Otto Lutje on 3/25/1951 in Humboldt County, California. They had at least 3 children.
