An Old Settler Gone .

"Died at his home 4. miles north of Neoga, August 8, 1887, Mr. John McCartney, and was buried at Zion Church Cemetery, August 9th. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Tate. There was a large attendence of relatives and friends. He was born in Virginia April 15, 1804. Aged 83 yrs., 3 months, and 13 days. Was married to Susana Powel, in Ohio, in 1833, moved to Illinois in 1837, and entered the land that he lived on up to the time or his death..

Uncle Johnny was not only one of our oldest citizens but he was one of the most quiet, useful and honored citizens, and died without an enemy. He lived 50 years on one farm. He has been a faithful member of the Missionary Baptist Church for many years. He lived the life of a Christian, and he said a few hours before he died, "that he was trusting the God that had cared for him through life." His wife died Feb. 16, 1883. Uncle Johnny and Aunt Susie lived together 46 years and reared seven children -- 5 boys and 2 girls-- who are all living but one. Their work is done and their troubles are over and they are now resting peacefully side by side. The relatives have the sympathy of the entire community."
