Leander "Lee" Jakes was the twin brother of Alexander Breckinridge Jakes. Their parents were John Jakes and Nancy Eoff Jakes. Lee Jakes married Narcissa Stephenson, daughter of George Dowell Stephenson and Elvira Taylor Stephenson, in Bedford County, Tennessee December 8, 1879. They had children: Eulah Jakes 1883, Leslie Jakes 1885, J. Will Jakes 1886, Dennis Jakes 1888, John Clinton Jakes 1891, Catherine Jakes 1897, Ashley Jakes 1902 and Clara Jakes 1903.
