Charles knew a lot of hardship in his life. He lost his wife Mary when she was only 36, leaving him 7 children to raise. Just a few years after that, his parents died so the children lost their grandparents. Then his daughter Edna died in 1943 at the age of 29, leaving 3 children, and his son Edwin died in WW II at the age of 30. Edna and Edwin were twins.
