Thursday:
ACCIDENT FATAL TO EMPORIAN

Randy Ford Killed At Soybean Plant

The area's second occupational fatality of the month was recorded Thursday evening when a 19-year-old Emporian was crushed in a fork lift at the Cook Industries plant, formerly Kansas Soya Products, Inc., on East Fifth Avenue.

Police said that Randy J. Ford, 1601 W. South Ave., was dead on arrival at Newman Memorial County Hospital after Emporian (sic) Fire Department rescue workers extricated him from the fork lift. Mr. Ford was operating the fork lift inside a boxcar loaded with soy beans when he became trapped between the fork and the body of the machine, according to officers.

Investigation of the incident is continuing. Police said that the youth's chest was crushed. There was no immediate explanation of how the accident occurred. The death was the third accidental death to occur at the soybean processing plant in four years. One man was killed on June 1st when an explosion wrecked an extraction tower, and a second was killed Feb. 13th, 1973, when a lift failed and dropped him 110 feet.

-----------------
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Roberts-Blue-Barnett Chapel. They will be conducted by Rev. Robert Moore, pastor of the Free Methodist Church. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

Mr. Ford, whose parents are Warren W. and Margaret Christiason (sic) Ford, was born June 30th, 1955 in Salina, and he was married to Terry Ann Fowler on Sept. 1st, 1973, in Emporia. He was a member of the Free Methodist Church.
