Thomas A. Powers, age 84, died October 4, 2005 at the Northern Michigan Hospital, Petoskey, Michigan. The son of Claude and Julia Powers was born in Barberton, Ohio on July 2, 1921.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Virginia; son, Thomas, Jr. (Terrie); daughter-in-law, Connie; grand-children, Carrie, Cayce, and Steven; great-granddaughter, Ellie Rae; his sister, Mary Tate; and a number of nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Timothy, sisters, Katherine Bross, Hazel Welch, Ann Godfrey and Evelyn Bowen.

Tom received his B.A. from the University of Akron and his M.A. in Psychology from Kent State University. His employment included the Columbus State School, the Ohio Department of Social Welfare - Division of Mental Hygiene and Corrections; and the Intermediate School District of Macomb County, Michigan, retiring as the Consultant for Psychological Services.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and remained in the Active Reserves through 1965, retiring at the rank of Major.

He was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa, Psi Chi (Honorary) Reserve Officers Association, Sons of the American Revolution, Settlers of Tennessee, Board of Directors of the North Congregational Church, Committee of Boy Scout and numerous professional organizations.

Visiting hour will be at 12 p.m. on Saturday, October 8, 2005, with the funeral following at 1 p.m., conducted by Rev. Dr. John Schleup at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Road. Interment will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Akron, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be rnade to the First Christian Church, 320 Monroe Street, Petoskey, Michigan 49770 or a charity of your choice.
