Plotner, Alice May Ann Arbor, MI

Alice Plotner, age 76, passed away Wednesday, October 29, 2003, after her valiant battle with cancer, at the Arbor Hospice Residence.

Beloved wife of Farrell D. Plotner of 57 years, cherished mother of Cheryll A. (Gary) Glowacki of Virginia, Pamela J. (John) Rothe of Illinois, and DeWight (Vicki) Plotner of Pinckney, MI. Adored grandmother of seven, Todd, Andrew, Bryan(Glowacki) Steven, Phillip (Rothe), Chelsie and Travis (Plotner). Great- grandmother of two, Jonathon and Sarah Glowacki. Alice is also survived by her brothers, Walter J. (Jean), Robert A. (Nadine) and Donald W. (preceded her in death) and sister- in-law, Dalila Downs.

Alice was born December 13, 1926 in Dayton OH, the daughter of Samira H. (Ralston) and Walter J. Downs.

As a result of her mother's early death, she and her brothers were raised in the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphans' Home in Xenia, OH. Upon graduating as the valedictorian she attended Bowling Green University and Toledo University.

She gave her hand in marriage to her best friend and devoted husband on March 29, 1946 at the Methodist Church, on State Street, in Ann Arbor, MI.

Alice volunteered many hours to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, both as a cook and Sunday School teacher. She worked tirelessly side by side with her husband as his partner in their family store, Campus Bike and Toy.

To area residents she is fondly remembered as the doll and toy lady because of her efforts to provide her customers with the best selection of dolls. Alice took great pride in providing the best customer service in Ann Arbor and generations of Ann Arborites recall buying their first bike, toy, doll or skateboard from her.

Known for having a green thumb, she loved spending her days in her garden surrounded by her beautiful flowers. In the evenings, she loved working on her crafts, many of which she shared with her friends at the Pittsfield Senior Citizens Center, where she was an active member. When not busy with her crafts, she could be found sitting at her computer e-mailing her many friends or working on her family genealogy.

Alice was a devoted and caring wife, mother and grand mother, proud of her Irish heritage. She was a courageous woman who faced her illness and death with admirable grace, providing her loved ones with a wonderful example on how to live life to it's fullest. Christmas was her favorite holiday and she wrapped gifts year around in preparation for the holiday. Alice never forgot a birthday of holiday of any of her loved ones and her homemade cards will be missed by all who loved her. Alice leaves the world a better place, having imparted strong values to all her children and grandchildren. She taught them to be fair and love well. The kitchen table, where many games and long conversations were shared will be empty without her but the joy and memories she gave will live on in their hearts.
