New York Governor, U.S. Senator. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1864 and established his legal career, serving as the City Attorney of Elmira, New York. He was a member of the New York House of Representatives, (1871-72), served as alderman of Elmira (1880-81) and was the 13th Mayor of Elmira in 1882. He also was Lieutenant Governor of New York, (1882-85). In 1885, when Governor Grover Cleveland resigned to take office as the 22nd U.S. President, Hill assumed the duties as the 29th New York Governor, serving until 1892. During his terms, child labor reform laws were supported, the state's economy flourished, a state forestry preserve was lobbied for and the first inmate ever was executed by means of the electric chair. After leaving office, he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate, serving (1892-97). After leaving the Senate, he served as president of the New York State Bar Association and practiced law until his death from Bright's disease and heart disease.
