William Thomas Gardner was born in Cirencester, England to William A. and Mary (Yarnton) Gardner. He was trained as a Carpenter like his father.

He married Priscilla Horton Gardner in 1880 and they immigrated to the US in the same year, coming to Marion, Ohio near where his aunt, Elizabeth Yarnton Walklett and her husband Joseph were living. In Marion, he became a building contractor, and build several homes in the town. In 1884 his brother, Edward Gardner, having finished his apprenticship as a Carpenter, came from England to join his brother in Marion. Although they had been baptised and raised in the Church of England, Priscilla, William, and Edward joined the Freewill Baptists in Marion. In February of 1890, William sufferred a hemmorage and was bedridden for seven (7) weeks. In April, he appeared to be getting better when he suddenly died on 21 April. Because his death was sudden and unexpected, a physical examination of the body was done concluding that he died of liver and stomach ailments consistent with his injury. He was bured at Marion Cemetery.

He and Priscilla never had any children.

His brother, Edward, was ordained to the Christian ministry in July, 1890 and was a pastor for the rest of his life.
