In Vietnam LCpl James Pence was assigned to and served with MABS-16, MAG-16, 1st Marine Air Wing, FMFPac.

On December 28 a CH-46D from HMM-364 returning to Da Nang under inclement conditions from Phu Bai flew into a Mountain at the Hai Van Pass in Quang Nam Province. The impact with the terrain killed all ten crew and passengers who were on board. LCpl James Pence, one of the passengers was one of the casualties.
