July 2, 1907 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada the very day her divorce from her first husband was final, Edith remarried a second time to George W. Breed stating on the record that she was a widow. A few short years later George filed for divorce against Edith in 1912 on grounds of cruelty. Edith reverted back to her first married name after her second divorce.
Edith married a third time to Theodore Joseph Lavigne October 11, 1920 in Detroit. Just barely 3 months into the marriage Edith approached the Sheriff of Wayne County regarding the care and custody of her 9 year old stepson Edward. Edith made several complaints of the boy's behavior and immediately signed away custody, making him a ward of the state and subject to a life growing up in an institution for handicap persons in the State of Michigan: The Michgan Home of the Feeble Minded and Epileptic in Lapeer.
Two years later Edith was widowed by her husband's sudden death on July 11, 1923. Edith quickly filed in the probate court to claim the meek $130 or so dollars Theodore had to his name and had him buried in an unmarked grave in Evergreen Cemetery. She didn't list his son's name as a survivor in the obituary nor in the probate proceedings. Although widowed with no known legal name change having taken place, Edith once again reverted back to her first married name of Thornton, which is listed on the 1930 Census and her death certificate.
Edith died as the result of a cerebral hemorrhage occuring about Septembr 5, 1938 according to her death certificate. She suffered, hanging on for two days until her death occurred on September 7, 1938. Her daughters had her buried in an unmarked grave in Woodmere Cemetery. Three months later on Christmas Day her daughter Pearl committed suicide by gas poisoning.
Edith has no living direct biological descendants. She was immediately survived by her daughters Pearl (James) Van Vliet and Frances (Diehl) Brace, neither of which had children who survived them or known children that predeceased them.
