At an early age his family moved from Iowa to western Kansas, later moving to Nebraska, where he spent his boyhood.

AA and Maggie moved from Topeka, Kansas, where they were married to a farm south of Verden.

He was the manager of the original townsite and instrumental in the establishment of Verden.

He was one of the first businessman to own a store in Verden.

With his brother O.E. Hiatt, they were the founders of the Verden News.

He died of typhoid fever at the Chickasha Hospital.
