Holder of the U.S. Navy's highest awards and a former Lima resident, retired Vice Admiral Edmund B. Taylor, 69, of Virginia Beach, Va., died at 9 p.m. Monday in a Virginia Beach hospital. Death was attributed to a heart attack.
Born in Chicago, the admiral moved to Lima as a youth with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Taylor. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, he was retired April 30, 1969, after a 45-year Navy career which earned him the Distinguished Service Medal, Navy Cross, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
At the time of his retirement, he was in command of the Anti-submarine Defense Force of the Atlantic Fleet. During World War II, he had commands at such places as Guantanamo Naval Base, in addition to the Atlantic Fleet Destroyer Force and Atlantic Fleet Anti-submarine Defense Force. He also was the chief of information for the Navy and aide to former Navy Secretary James Forrestal.
A graduate of the former Central High School here, Adm. Taylor received his commission in 1925. He also served as captain of Annapolis' football team and was named an All-American Lacrosse player.
His son, Navy Capt. Edmund B. Taylor Jr., was killed May 8, 1972, in a helicopter accident at Vietnam. His widow, Joan of Coronado, Calif., survives, with four children.
Adm. Taylor and his wife, Doda, have resided for the past few years at 245 Bay Colony Dr., Virginia Beach. His mother, Rebecca, was a former Ohio "Mother of the Year" and his brothers have been long-time members of the Navy or Air Force.
They are retired Navy Capt. Thomas H. of Leesburg, Va.; retired Cmdr. Crittenden B. of Sun City, Ariz., and Richard B. of 1602 Shawnee Rd., formerly with the Air Force and recently named "Ohio Fraternalist of the Year."
The admiral also is survived by a daughter, Faye Elizabeth (Mrs. Walter) Butler of Palm Beach, Fla., and her four children; a sister, Jane Klein of La Jolla, Calif., whose husband, Doyen, is a retired Naval captain.
Over the years, Adm. Taylor has been a frequent Lima visitor and speaker for among other occasions, Armed Forces Day celebrations.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Chapel-in-the-Woods, Naval Air Station, Norfolk, Va., with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery there.
