John Earle Butler of Georgetown, Texas, passed away at his home on Sunday, March 15, 2009, at the age of 87.

Graveside services were held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at Fulkenberry Cemetery, Groesbeck, Texas, with the Reverend Max Burkhead officiating.

Mr. Butler was born on September 2, 1921, in Groesbeck, Texas to John W. Butler and Lula Pearl (Biggs)Butler. He grew up in Groesbeck and graduated from Groesbeck High School in 1938; and then graduated from the University of Texas in Austin. John Earle united in marriage with Louise Virginia Wilson in 1942 and they were married for 48 years until her death in 1990.

He was a Veteran of World War II, having served from October 1942 through November 1945 in the US Army, where he was a Staff Sergeant in the 15th Photo Reconnaissance Squardon. He was an aerial photographer, preparing maps prior to invasions. He participated in battles in North Africa and Italy, where he was serving during the recapture of Italy and the capture and execution of Mussolini in April 1945. Following his military service, he started work with the US Postal Service as a route carrier with a leather mail sack, and worked his way up to Station Supervisor in Corpus Christi, Texas. After his retirement, the Butlers moved to Georgetown to be nearer their daughter in Austin and his beloved Texas Longhorns. Following the death of his first wife in 1990, John Earle married Katy Bain Rogers in 1993. John Earle was a Methodist and a Mason, and avid Texas Longhorn fan. He was so proud to have lived to see the Texas Longhorns become National Champions of College Football in 2005, and was looking forward to the next championship.

He is survived by wife, Katy F. Butler; daughter, Dorothy B. Stidham and husband Ed of Salado; and grandson, Trey Vanderhule and wife Shannon (DVM) of Keller, Texas.
