Irene Whitten
Mrs. Leona Irene Whitten was born the first child of five children to Gustav Adam Gebhard and Mrs. Juliette Fay (Haines) Gebhard on March 15, 1914 on a farm west of Long Island in Phillips County, Kansas. She departed this life Sunday afternoon, August 26, 2001 at the Harlan County Hospital in Alma, Nebraska. Her age was 87 years, five months and eleven days.
Irene, as everyone came to know her, grew to womanhood in the area northwest of Long Island, Kansas where she attended the Dry Creek Rural School District No. 119 which was two miles west and three miles north of Long Island, Kan. She attended high school at Long Island where she graduated with the class of 1932. Following high school, she completed Normal Training at Hays, Kan. and taught rural schools at Pleasant Hill Rural School District, No. 95, the Walnut Rural School District, No.78 and the Red Star Rural School District, No. 118, all in Phillips County, Kansas.
On December 24, 1934, Miss Leona Irene Gebhard was united in marriage to Waldo Warden Whitten at the Kearney County Courthouse in Minden, Neb. To this union five children were born, Gwendolyn Jean, Wanda Wauneta, Beverly Joyce, Stanley Galen and Janis Elaine.
Irene has resided her entire married life in Alma with the exception of two years, 1950 to 1952 spent at Ellsworth, Kan. Irene was employed as a telephone operator and later as chief operator by the Nebraska Continental Telephone Company, which later became the General Telephone Company.
She retired in 1979 after over 30 years of service. She also worked as janitor for the Alma Post Office for ten years.
Her husband, Waldo, preceded her in death on September 1, 1981.
Irene moved from her home at 805 West Fifth Street in Alma to the Parkview Manor in March 1999, entering ColonialVilla Good Samaritan Center in March 2000. She had been a patient at the Harlan County Hospital in Alma since June 2001.
Irene was a member of the First Christian Church in Alma.
In addition to her husband, Irene was preceded in death by her father on January 22, 1962, her mother on March 23, 1983; two brothers, Harlan and Ivan Gebhard and one sister, Frances Moody and husband, Donald.
She leaves to mourn her passing four daughters; Gwendolyn Westerbeck and husband Donald of Overland Park, Kan., Wanda McKenzie and husband Francis of Alma, Beverly Keeten and husband Paul of Jamestown, N. Car. and Janis Cramer and husband "Rick" of Denison, Ia.; one son, Stanley and wife Jeannine of McCook; one brother, Charles Gebhard and wife Eileen of rural Alma; one sister-in-law Dorothy Gebhard of Grand Island; fourteen grandchildren ten great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 30, 2001 at 10:30 at Banta-Torrey Funeral Home in Alma, with Rev Paul Johnson officiating.
Music was provided by organist Mrs. Eula Johnson and a duet by Rev. Paul and Eula Johnson. Pallbearers wer Lt. Col. Mark Westerbeck, U.S.M.C., Steven McKenzie, Scott McKenzie, Douglas Keeten, Brent Keeten, Bradley Whitten and Jason Cramer. Burial was in the Alma Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the Harlan County Hospital in Alma.
