Montpelier Man Dilled in Car Crash
Ted Bagley of Montpelier, Idaho was killed in a car wreck near Raymond last Wednesday night. He was riding alone and it is presumed that he was traveling fast and a tire blew out throwing him off the road. He lived a short time after the accident but did not recover enough to tell how it happened. Mr Bagley was married to Ila Hoopes about a year ago. He had been working outside and she was in Fairview.
Car Accident Kills Montpelier Man
A sad and fatal accident happened last Wednesday evening when John A (Ted) Bagley enroute form Cokeville to Fairview Wyoming to meet his wife who was to accompany him to Salt Lake City to spend a few days with Ted's aged father. A blow out in the rear tire caused the car to roll over several times although he was only driving between 30 and 35 miles according to witnesses to the accident. Ted was thrown out of the car and badly crushed. He was rushed to the hospital at Montpelier and all was done for him that was possible, but he passed away a few hours later.
A very impressive service was held for him in the 2nd ward at Montpelier, conducted by Bishop Byron Mumford. Many beautiful flowers showed that Ted had a host of friends. All of his brothers and sisters and many friends were in attendance.
John A. (Ted) Bagley, Jr. was born sept 15, 1907 at Salt Lake City, Utah. His father was John A Bagley former Attorney General of Ida. and prominent attorney through out the intermountain states; his grandfather John Bagley and his grandmother Mary Bagley, were Mormon pioneers, both having crossed the plains with the pioneers, and were early settlers of Bear Lake Valley.
His mother was Matilda Peterson, of Bloomington, Idaho.
Few people knew Ted by his real name of John Bagley Jr., and an interesting experience before Ted was one year old gave him this nickname, which was so pronounced that it remained with him forever.
In 1908 Ted at the age of 8 months accompanied his father and mother to San Francisco where they were going as guests of Lt Commander Henry Pierson of the U.S.S. Illinois one of the vessels of the American Fleet on their famous voyage around the world and President Theodore Roosevelt.
Ted was a small baby with tiny features and once aboard the U.S.S. Illinois, he was the feature attraction for all officers and men, as well as guests
At this time it was suggested that he be placed in one of the large cantons and he was placed in one and a picture taken of him with Theodore Roosevelt's glasses on his nose. The smile and grin that covered his baby face showing plainly his teeth or rather what he had at that time, was so nearly like the features of President Roosevelt, that he was immediately nicknamed "Teddy" and as he grew older it gradually shortened to "Ted".
In 1912 his parents moved back to Montpelier, from Salt Lake, where he attended school.
Ted loved the outdoors and spent two years in the Sawtooth mountains, where he learned about the sheep industry and which occupation he followed most, throughout his life.
He was well known around Salt Lake City, Montpelier and Cokeville. He was married to Ila Hoopes, May 10, 1940 at Lewisville, Idaho.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his father, five brothers, L.L, Bagley, Almorean Bagley and Hawley Bagley all of Salt Lake City, Grant Bagley of San Diego, Cal. and Major Bagley of Burley, Idaho. Four sisters; Mrs Archie Whitely of Salt Lake City, Mrs Clarence William of Los Angeles, Mrs Henry Erickson and Mrs David Glenn both of Lewisville, Idaho.
