RANDOLPH--Robert Dow Carpenter, Jr, 74, died Friday morning, Aug. 21, at the Berlin Health and Rehab Center in Berlin. He was born January 5, 1924 in Barre, the son of Robert and Anna (Carter) Carpenter. He attended Waterbury schools and graduated from Waterbury High School in 1941.
Following his education he enlisted in the US Navy, serving in WWII. After the war he came home and went to work for New England Telephone and Telegraph as a lineman. He worked out of Burlington for several years before being transferred to Bethel where he met Muriel Phelps, whom he married Nov 7, 1952 in Bethel. He retired in 1977 after 32 years of service, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and yard sales. He especially liked spending time at his deer camp and being with his family. His memberships included The American Legion and Telephone Pioneers of America. He was a former member of the Randolph Village Fire Dept, and the Randolph Fish and Game Club. He leaves his wife of Randolph; three sons, Robert D. III and Melissa Carpenter of Randolph; James H. and Lou Ann Carpenter of Colchester; and John J. Carpenter of Colchester; three daughters, Joanna Carpenter and Dawn LaCross of Jericho, Jennifer A. and Mark Murray of Windsor and Jeanette M. and James Wood of Boise, ID; a brother, Orin Carpenter of Waterbury; a sister, Alberta Savin of Barre; 12 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by a brother, Leslie Carpenter and a sister Helen Grace. Services were held Monday, Aug. 24, the Rev. John Milanese officiating. Phyllis Hawley served as organist. A poem was written and read by Missy Carpenter. Reflections were spoken by Lanie and Jordan Carpenter.
Bearers were Mark Murray, Mike Smith, Adam Carpenter, and Mr.s Carpenter;s three sons Robert, John and James. Burial followed in Pleasant View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to either The White River Valley Ambulance, P.O. Box 364 Randolph, VT, 05060, or to the Berlin Health and Rehab Center Activities Dept., Airport Rd, Barre, VT 05641. Arrangements are under the
direction of the Day Funeral Home, Randolph.
