William W. Leehan, 80, who was wounded in World War II and worked for nearly 40 years at Union Carbide Corp., died Sunday (June 27, 1999) in Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center after being stricken in his Jerauld Avenue home.

Leehan was born in Bayonne, N.J., and attended schools there. He joined the U.S. Army in 1938 and was sent to Fort Niagara, which was a regular Army post then.

During his year at Fort Niagara, he met Evelyn Genova of Niagara Falls and married her on May 6, 1939.

After his discharge, Leehan found work at Union Carbide, but in 1944 he volunteered to rejoin the Army. He saw action in France, Belgium and Germany and was wounded Feb. 12, 1945, earning the Purple Heart. He was discharged as a sergeant in 1946 in Switzerland.

Returning home, Leehan resumed working at Union Carbide and worked there until his retirement in 1978.

He was an avid bowler and enjoyed other sports, including baseball and golf. He also enjoyed reading.

Leehan was a member of LaSalle Griffon Post 917, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a fourth-degree member of Niagara Council 247, Knights of Columbus, and served many years with its color guard.

He also was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Union Carbide Quarter-Century Club. He received a sports award at the North End Reunion in 1975.

Besides his wife, survivors include a son, Allen; a daughter, Sally DeSantis; a brother, Edwin of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Marcella Mager of Tucson; and two grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 2486 Grand Ave., after prayers at 8:45 in Spallino-Amigone Funeral Home, 1300 Pine Ave.

Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston.
