Philipp was the only son of Valentin and Sabrina Kreis. He had three sisters: Helene, the wife of Karl Wallenda; Henrietta "Yetty", the wife of Arthur Grotefent (Karl Walenda's half-brother; and Annie, the wife of Max Schonaeur (they remained in Germany). The Kreis family were builders of Carousels and other amusement park rides in Germany.

Philipp performed with Karl Wallenda's highwire troupe both in America and in Europe. He first married Winifred Smith in 1934, apparently while on tour in England. They divorced the following year (according to a great-nephew of Winifred's.)

Philipp next married Marian Mohrmann on Aug 30, 1939, "on the wire" at Pontchartrain Beach where the Wallenda Troup was performing at the time. Marian was a waitress from New Orleans. She died the following spring after giving birth to their son, Mario Kreis. (Karl and Helen raised/adopted Mario.)

Philipp then married Madeline Fisher in Sarasota on Oct 17, 1944. They had two children, Ellen and Philipp.

On July 27, 1950, Philipp and Madeline were travelling with the Wallenda Troupe from Philadelphia to Great Falls, Montana. Near Lexington, NE, their house trailer they were pulling got a flat tire. While Philipp was changing the tire, he was struck by an automobile and killed. Brief services were held in Lexington before the Troupe went on to Montana. Full services and burial in Sarasota were held later after the show season was over.
