William Chitwood was born Feb. 16, 1787 in Rutherford Co., North Carolina. He was the son of James Chitwood (1751-1839) and Martha White (1749-1830).

William's father, James, was born in Powhatan, Virginia. His mother Martha was born in Orange Co., Virginia. Both died in a part of Campbell Co., Tennessee that is now part of Scott Co., TN.

James' paternal grandfather was Richard Chitwood (1722-1785), born in North Carolina. His paternal great-grandfather was Mathias Chitwood (1681-1755), an immigrant from Herefordshire, England.

William migrated to Tennessee with his parents and siblings about 1796, the year of Tennessee's statehood. He was eight years old at the time.

About 1808 William married Sarah Reed (1783-1854). She was born in Washington Co., North Carolina (now Tennessee). Her parents were John Reed (1760-1838) and Nancy Morris (1760-1856).

William and Sarah had at least four known children. They were Mitchell Chitwood (1809- ?), Joel Chitwood (1812-1884), Seth Chitwood (1818-1834) and Martha Ann "Patsy" Chitwood (1820-1901).

It is thought that Sarah died between 1820 and 1826, (when Patsy was born and when William remarried. His second wife was Rachel Hamby (1809-1886). Sarah Reed is thought to be buried in the Chitwood Cemetery in Winfield, Scott Co., TN with a now unidentifiable marker, though no record has been found to prove that she is actually buried there.

William died on June 29, 1871 near Winfield, Scott Co., TN. at the age of 84. He and Rachel had been married about 45 years and had had five known children. William was buried in the Wright Cemetery located near Winfield, Scott Co., TN.
