U.S. Congressman. Educated at private schools, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1820 and commenced to practice law in Winchester, Kentucky. He was a member of the Kentucky State House of Representatives, (1820-26) and judge of the circuit court in 1829. In 1835, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress, serving until 1837. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-eighth Congress, serving (1843-45). He was again elected to the Thirtieth Congress, serving (1847-49). After his term, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 61.
