Daughter of Andrew Jackson Pendley and Lucinda (Herndon) Pendley; granddaughter of Edmund Herndon and Selena/Celia (Smith) Herndon of Colleton, South Carolina.
Her grandfather Edmund Herndon was a second cousin of Dr. Willis Roberts (1779-1853), personal secretary of Gov. William Wyatt Bibb, first governor of Alabama and one of the committee that selected the site of the first state capitol of Alabama, at Cahawba.

Some family trees give her name as Rosetta Estes Pendley or Rose Atta Estes Pendley. While she might have been named Estes for family friends, her future husband's mother's family, it is more likely the name Estes is a mistake.
