ELDRIDGE, Iowa - E. E. "Joe" Porter, a resident of Davenport Lutheran Home, formerly of Eldridge, died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at the home. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Davenport Lutheran Home. Family graveside services will be held Saturday morning at Pine Hill Cemetery, Davenport. Chambers & Sass Funeral Home, Eldridge, is in charge of arrangements. Joe farmed south of Eldridge for many years before retiring. He was one of the first farmers in Scott County to introduce yorkshire hogs for pork production to this area. In addition to farming, Joe drove the Scott County Bookmobile from 1951 to 1972. He was born Dec. 28, 1908, in DeWitt, the son of Joseph and Mary (Pasold) Porter. He was united in marriage to Lois Oetzmann in Eldridge on June 7, 1932. She preceded him in death June 5, 1997. He had been a member of Knights of Pythias since 1940, a member of the Davenport Moose since 1971 and a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Eldridge. In addition, he was a life member of Iowa Library Association and American Yorkshire Club. One of his favorite activities was trout fishing with his wife, Lois. Memorials may be made to the family. Those left to honor his memory include his daughters and son-in-law, Alberta and Delmar Gilbert and Vicki Haulk, all of Eldridge; his son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Jean Porter, Sun City, Ariz., and St. Paul, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Dorothy Cressman and Ida Mae Doner.
