May was born just north of Pueblo Colorado, the sixth child of David Savage and Phoebe Matoon. In 1883 her parents moved the family to Buffalo Wyoming. She grew up to be both devoted to reading and study and to be a fearless horse woman. In 1892 She married Tom Gardner. After he died in 1914 she continued to run the Ranch for many years raising both a son and daughter. Later she sold the ranch and moved to California where she married a Frank Bell, who preceded her in death.
