US Congressman. He taught school for several years and then attended the University of Virginia, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Staunton, Virginia, in 1874. He was Judge of Augusta County (1880-1883), when he resigned moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, practiced his profession for two years, then returned to Staunton, Virginia and continued the practice of law. In 1899, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-sixth Congress, serving until 1901. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was a member of the Virginia State constitutional convention in 1901 and resumed the practice of law until his death at age 76.
