Helen Galloway McNicholl was born to a wealthy family. Her father worked with the Canadian Pacific Railway. At the age of one, Helen moved to Montreal, Quebec. The following year when she was two, she came down with scarlet fever that left her deaf but this did not daunt her strong spirit. She learned to lipread.
Helen showed a great artistic talent in which her family encouraged her to develop. At the age of 20, she attended art classes getting instructions from professional and well known artists. She attended the University of London, England then transferred to the art colony in St. Ives.
Helen was viewed as a talented impressionist better known for capturing the light of nature and its effects on the environment.
Helen McNicholl passed away at the young age of 36 from diabetes in Swanage, England. To this day she has become one of Canada's finest impressionists despite being unknown for many years until recently her works have gained more popularity among art circles. Her works are gradually becoming Canada's impressionist jewels.
At a recent art auction in Vancouver in 2008, one of her paintings sold for $92,000.
