Frances was born June 6, 1929, the daughter of Daniel Harris Penton and Frances Dunn Penton. She attended Forest Hills elementary and New Hanover High School before entering St. Catherine's School in Richmond, Va., where she graduated in 1947. After graduating from Hollins College in Roanoke Va. with a degree in Psychology, she taught kindergarten in Alexandria. Va. and at the St. James Day School in Wilmington.
Frances and John were married on September 11, 1952 while John was serving in the US Army Corp of Engineers. After serving a tour during the Korean conflict, they returned to Wilmington where they have enjoyed a wonderful life together for the past 58 years.
Frances' greatest joy has been the presence of her son's and daughter's two beautiful families. In addition to her beloved husband, she is survived by her son, John Reid Murchison III and his wife Linda Spencer Murchison of Wilmington; her daughter Frances Dunn Murchison and her husband the Rev. Jay Sidebotham of Lake Forest, Illinois; her four preciousx grandchildren--Sarah Murchison Campbell and her husband Andrew Patrick Campbell of Washington, DC; Clare Spencer Murchison of Greenwich, Connecticut; John Reid Murchison Sidebotham and Helen Murchison Sidebotham of Lake Forest; her dear sister Ann Penton Longley; and fifteen wonderful nieces and nephews.
A lifetime member of St. James Parish, Frances lived by her faith and brought to her family the real meaning of Christian love. Her life was spent putting her family and others before herself.
During her lifetime she was active in many charitable organizations. She was President of the Junior League and the Catherine Kennedy Home, and an active member of the Colonial Dames and The Ministering Circle.
Visitation will be held at her home, 1930 Ashbrook Drive, on Monday April 25th from 3 to 5 PM.
The funeral service will be held at St. James Parish, Wilmington at 2 PM Tuesday, April 26, 2011, officiated by the Rev. Ron Abrams and the Rev. Jay Sidebotham with the internment of ashes in the St. Francis garden, followed by a reception in the Great Hall.
