Never within the history of this section of the state has there been a time when so many of the older residents have passed away as at the present time. The last name to add to the long list is that of John H Berry, whose home is on the Berry farm, just below the village of Ashland, but within the boundary of New Hampton. Mr Berry died Wednesday morning after a sickness of ten days of plemo-pneumonia.

John Howe Berry was born in Holderness, now Ashland, May 10, 1836, and was 70 years, 10 months and 10 days of age. For many years Mr Berry resided on that is now known as the Ben Pease place neat Little Squam Lake, but for the past 35 years he has lived on the place where he died. He received a common school education from the district schools of that time. When in his younger days Mr. Berry was in the restaurant business in Boston, but this was only for a short time, he then returning to New Hampshire and taking up the trade of a farmer, at which he had met with exceptionally good success. During his life he had been intimately connected with both the towns of Ashland and New Hampton including that of Representative to the General Court at Concord and also that of first selectman.

He was one of those closely connected with the Ashland free Will Baptist Church and one of its members.

May 11, 1861, Mr Berry was married to Clara Buzzell, who died February 27, 1899. Ten children resulted from this union, five now living, including Dora L Berry of Boston, Edward H Berry of Boston, Mrs H N Crimmins of Ashland, John G Berry of Boston and Mrs William Patterson of Plymouth. Besides the children Mr Berry also has three brothers living, Horace W Berry of Boston, Napoleon B Berry of New York City, and Charles H Berry of North Adams, Massachusetts.

John Howe Berry was one of those public spirited men whose life helped to improve the community's welfare and whose home life was a model of perfection.

Funeral services will be held at the Berry home Saturday afternoon at 2:30 with the Reverend J Franklin Babb of Laconia as the officiating clergyman, assisted by Reverend Mr Avery of Ashland. >The Ashland Citizen, March 23, 1907, p5.

John is the son of Jonathan and Nancy (Howe) Berry.
