As George "Cubits" he enlisted on 16 February 1865 as a private in Company A, 1st Potomac Home Brigade Infantry. He remained in the company when the brigade was redesignated 13th Regiment, Maryland Infantry, and was mustered out along with the regiment on 29 May 1865. He may have been Montgomery County's last Civil War veteran. (The pension card for "Cubitt, George" shows service in "A, 13 Md. Inf.")

While obituaries state that George W. Cubitt was born on 26 March 1842 and died at the age of 95, there is some uncertainty about the year of his birth. According to his 1865 enlistment papers, he was age 18; thus born in 1847 or 1848. His ages reported in the 1870 through 1930 censuses indicate he was born from 1846 to 1853 (the latter year clearly inconsistent with his Union Army service.)

Obituary

Poolesville, Md., September 28, 1937 — George W. Cubitt, 95, veteran of the Civil War and believed to have been the last Union survivor of the conflict residing in Montgomery County, died Sunday night at the home of his son-in-law ans daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Charles V. Willard, here, following an illness of about a week.

A heart attack believed superinduced by overexertion in cutting corn on his farm near Poolesville, was given as the cause of death. He was born March 26, 1842.

He is survived by six children: Mrs. Walter Butler, Mrs. Roy Bodmer, Mrs. Willard and Frank E. and Isaac Cubitt, all of Poolesville, and George Cubitt, Braddock Heights, Md.

Mr. Cubitt was a native of Frederick County, Md., but came to his county when a young man and had lived in this vicinity ever since. Until stricken with his fatal illness, he was remarkably active for one of his years and worked regularly on his farm.

Funeral services will be held from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bodmer this afternoon. The services will be conducted by Rev. Roy Cook, rector of St. Peter's Episcopal Church here. Burial to be in Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville, Md.

George W. Cubitt, of Poolesville, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Willard, in Poolesville Sunday night at nine o'clock. He was aged ninety-five years, having been born March 26, 1842, in Frederick county. He was a son of the late George and Mary Cubitt. He was a farmer and had served in the [Union] army during the Civil War.

He is survived by the following children; George I. Cubitt, of Frederick; Mrs. Mollie Bodmer, Beallsville; Mrs. Rose Butler, Mrs. Charles Willard, Frank Cubitt and Isaac Cubitt, all of Poolesville.

Funeral services will be held today from the home of Roy Bodmer, Beallsville, at two o'clock. Interment in the Monocacy cemetery in Beallsville. William B. Hilton, funeral director."
