He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in WWII. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Carpenters Union Local 263, and Jednota Slovakian Society.

He is survived by his wife, Ida E. Calabrese Ruda; six sisters, Mary Mackay, Margaret Gones, Agnes O'Toole, Anna Lancy, Betty Reeger, and Clara Johnston; and three brothers, Frank, Anthony and Edward Ruda.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Stephen and Joseph, and one sister, Josephine Selock.
