William married Irene Stewart, of Donegal, Pennsylvania, at Donegal on December 17, 1861. She was born around 1847 in Pennsylvania. Six children were born to William and Irene, including Carrie, Maud, Zella A, Erma and Erla.
On October 11, 1881, William was elected, on the Democratic ticket, as Appanoose County, Iowa Sheriff, serving two terms, 1882 through 1885. William also served as Centerville, Iowa City Marshal, in 1881 and 1882 and again in 1887 and 1888.
Previous to coming to Iowa William served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He enlisted with Company K 206th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, serving from August 26, 1864 until the end of the war, being discharged as Sergeant on June 26, 1865 at Richmond Virgina. His regiment served in the Army of the Potomac, and participated in the battles of Fredericksburg, Petersburg and Antietam and in several skirmishes near Richmond.
After serving as marshall, William, moved to Fort Madison, Iowa were he worked as a prison guard at the Iowa State Penitentiary. He later worked as a bridge carpenter and moved to Argentine, Kansas.
William died at the Leavenworth National Military Home, at Leavenworth, Kansas, on March 11, 1913 and is buried there at the Leavenworth National Cemetery. His wife, Irene, died on February 8, 1885 and is buried at Oakland Cemetery, in Centerville, Iowa along with three of their young children.
