Scrub Hawley, a resident of Ransom Canyon, Texas, passed from this life on Sunday, April 24, 2011, at the age of 79 years, following a brief illness.

Born in Manitou, Okla., on Aug. 26, 1931, to Charles R. and Gladys Dunn Hawley, he was raised and schooled in Dickens, Texas. Following graduation from high school, he joined the Navy, where he served in Japan and the Pacific during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge, he worked in the oil patch before obtaining a degree in journalism at Texas Tech University.

A friend convinced him to apply for a teaching position in McAdoo, Texas. He spent his career teaching elementary school there and in Spur, Texas, and also farmed in Dickens. On May 28, 1988, he married "the love of his life," Kaia Adamson, in Dickens, Texas. In 1996 they moved to Ransom Canyon.

Scrub loved teaching children, riding his bicycle, playing cards and meeting new people. He was truly a man who never met a stranger, and would often pause his bicycle rides to introduce himself or just to chat. He was founding member of the Slaton Half Fast Bicycle Club and the Scrub Hawley Bicycle Club in Dickens, Texas. He loved bicycle riding and traveled all over the world to participate in different cycling events. He was a lover of words and enjoyed quoting Shakespeare and Mark Twain and writing humorous stories. An indomitable spirit, Scrub continued riding his bicycle until the last month of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Kaia; a brother, Curtis Hawley of East Texas; a sister, Marle Brown of Lubbock, Texas; nieces and nephews; innumerable friends; and his "lifelong" companion, his blue-tick hound, "Buford."

His parents and two sisters preceded him in death.

A celebration of Scrub's life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2011, at the Ranch House at Ransom Canyon. Attendees are asked to dress casually for a time of remembering this remarkable friend. Drink a little coffee, make a toast with champagne, and recall and laugh at all his shenanigans.

Scrub will be cremated, and his ashes will be left in many of his favorite places. All his friends are welcome to come Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, donate to public radio or TV, the food bank, or your favorite charity.
