Called by Death: John F. Bornheimer
On Tuesday morning 12:18 o'clock J. F. Bornheimer, an old pioneer of our city, died at the age 71 years, 6 months and 18 days. Born in 1838 in Karbecklaheim [Gau-Bickelheim], Hessen-Darmstadt, he came to America in 1844 with his parents; first to New Berlin Township, Waukesha County, where he was active as a farmer up to the Civil War. He enlisted in 46th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment and in 1863 moved to East Water Street as a saloon keeper.
For 10 years he's been withdrawn from all business. His wife [Caroline] preceded him in death four years ago. His first home, which he built himself here in Milwaukee, was a brick building. Four sons, Henry, manager Wisconsin Telephone Co. in Marinette [Wis.], Ernst, barber and cigar seller, Andreas and Friedrich, with the fire department, as well as two daughters, Mrs. Caroline Schröder and Gertrude Wallis, except the first, all living in Milwaukee to mourn their father. The burial takes place Friday, 21 January, at 8:30 in the morning, in the house of his son, 535 East Water Street, afterwards to Calvary Cemetery.
