Joseph R. Phillips was 67 when he passed away on December 1 in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Bonham, Texas. He was born Sept. 21, 1913 in Rosebud, son of James and Lillian Phillips. After spending his youth in the Ashland and Broadus area, he served in the Army during World War II until 1945 when he returned to Rosebud County where he ranched and worked at Costrip.He later operated the City Cafe and the Tastee Freeze drive-in in Forsyth until 1972 when he moved to Powell Wyo. and later retired and moved to Gordonville, Texas in 1979, married Alice Horsman on June 13, 1962.

He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts of Forsyth and the Eagles Lodge of Powell, Wyo.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Denise Kay at home and Mrs. Edith Scott of Tacoma, Wash.; two sons, James of Springfield, Va., and Donald G. of Lathroy, Calif.; also two stepsons, Jerry Calflisch of St. Louis Park, Minn., and Rodney Baldwin of Renton Wash.; two step-daughters, Roxanne Gilge and Beverly Boschee, both of Forsyth; three brothers, Harry of Spokane, Wash., James Gerald of Ashland; two sisters, Mrs. Ethelma Drung of Medford, Ore., and Janie Swank of The Dalles, Ore.; 21 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

The Rev. Cecil Eanes of the Federated Church will officiate at the services , Dec. 6 at 10:30 a.m. in Beals Mortuary Chapel. The Rev. Rick Griffin will sing "Beyond the Sunset" and "How Great thou Art" He will be accompanied by Rita Martens.
Pallbearers will be Hermie Harkin, Glen Blakesley, Stan Edgell, Art Polich, Robert Martinek, and Joe Vassau.

Interment will be in Forsyth Cemetery with Military honors.
