Ernest Griffith
Ernest A. Griffith, 104, believed to be the eldest resident of Denton, died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at the Vintage Health Care Center.
He was born Sept. 8, 1896, in Commanche, to Charles Daniel and Laura (Whitlock) Griffith. On Sept. 16, 1923, he married Clela Clay, in Wellington. She preceded him in death Feb. 17, 1991.
Prior to his retirement in Denton, Mr. Griffith spent 40 years in the cotton ginning and grain business. Early in his career, he worked as a bookkeeper and general office worker at Williams and Miller Gin Co. in Wellington. In 1926, he moved to Weinert, forming a partnership with Will Stith, and operated Griffith and Stith Independent Ginners. After Mr. Stith's death, the business operated as Griffith Gin and Grain Co. until it was sold in 1944. Mr. Griffith also spent 16 years managing cotton gins and over 50 grain elevators for the Kimball Grain Business in Woodward, Okla., and Sherman. Before 1943, he served on the Haskell County School Board and was a member of the Haskell County Rationing Board during World War II.
Mr. Griffith was a member of the Rotary Club for 40 years, a volunteer for 25 years at Flow Hospital, and an usher at the First United Methodist CHurch for 21 years. He has been a Mason with Scottish Rite of Dallas for 50 years and a Mason at the Blue Lodge in Wellington for 75 years. He also served as president of the "Baggy Pants Club," a group of men who meet weekly to solve world problems.
The service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17, in Cole Chapel at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bill Crouch will officiate. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. DeBerry Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.
The family will receive friends from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17, in Flynn Hall Lounge at the First United Methodist Church.
Memorials may be made to the Ernest A. Griffith Scholarship Fund at the First United Methodist Church of Denton.
Survivors include his son, Dr. E. Clay Griffith of Dallas; two grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren.
