Peter Bennett was a deacon of the Clayton Baptist Church. He moved to Jefferson County in 1836, first to the Town of Lyme and then to Clayton.
Peter's mother Charlotte died in Clayton according to town records. He was dismissed by letter from the Three Mile Bay church Nov 30, 1867 and admitted by letter to the Clayton Church on June 6 1868. Peter died intestate as shown by proceedings in the Jefferson County Surrogate Court (Book I, p 73).
In 1830 Peter C Bennet is listed in Charlestown, Montgomery Co, NY next to Charlott Bennet ( 1830; Census Place: Charlestown, Montgomery, New York; Series: M19; Roll: 95; Page: 61; Family History Library Film: 0017155).

The 1840 Census shows Peter C [misread as O] Bennett living in Lyme, Jefferson NY with a total family of 6 members, 4 under the age of 20 (1840; Census Place: Lyme, Jefferson, New York; Roll: 292; Page: 630; Image: 1179; Family History Library Film: 0017190).

Records of deeds in the Jefferson County Clerk's Office show the first purchase of property in Jefferson County by Peter was in the Town of Lyme in Lots 400 and 401 from Vincent LeRay de chaumont on March 9 1847. He paid the sum of $602.73 for 100 28/100 acres on the shore. The 1864 map shows the farm near to other relatives including T Cool, Selter, and Klock. (Liber 84 P 137)

In 1850 the census records show the Bennet [sic] family as Peter 45 Farmer b NY, Clarissa 41 b Vermont, James Henry 18, Roselia 17, Sarah Ann 13, Mary Jane 10, John Milton 6, and Lyman 3 (all children b NY) (1850; Census Place: Lyme, Jefferson, New York; Roll: M432_514; Page: 382A; Image: 525).

The 1855 New York Census of the Town of Lyme, Jefferson County, NY lists the Bennett family as Peter C 50 b Saratoga Farmer, Clarissa 47 b Vermont, James H 23 b Montgomery Farmer, Rosellen 22 b Montgomery, Mary J 15, John M 11, Lyman C 8, and William O 3 all b Jefferson (New York, State Census, June 14, 1855 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2013. Jefferson County, Town of Lyme, Third Election District, p. 7 of 14).

The family is listed in the 1860 Census of the Town of Lyme with the surname mispelled as Brunetti and the members noted as Peter 55, Clarissa 51, Mary 20, Jno 16, Lyman 13, and Wm 8, everyone b NY (1860; Census Place: Lyme, Jefferson, New York; Roll: M653_762; Page: 226; Image: 225; Family History Library Film: 803762).

On February 6, 1865, Peter purchased a farm in the Town of Clayton from Stephen Hale with River frontage and about 126 acres for $3,900. He sold this to John Fitzgerald in December 1882 for $5,000 at the same time he purchased a farm of several hundred acres in the Town of Antwerp for $5,684. (Liber 231 P 561) The deed to the Antwerp farm provided that possession would not be granted until March 1, 1883, which turned out to be several weeks after Peter died. However, at the same time the deed was recorded, another deed of the farm from Peter to his son Lyman C. Bennett was recorded on December 30, 1882. Perhaps Peter was only on the deed to guarantee the payment of a mortgage that
was assumed on the purchase in the amount of $1,100.
Peter was listed as a subscriber to a Slip (pew) in the Clayton Baptist Church for one year from April 1 1864 with rental at $10 payable quarterly. His was Slip 21, located in the sixth row and in front of Wm Cool, likely a relative of his son-in-law Truman.

P C 65 and Cloey 61 b VT are listed in the 1870 census with Lyman 22, Orlando 18, Lena 28, and Cora 3/12 (BENNETT P C 65 M W NJ NY JEFFERSON CLAYTON 1870; Series: M593 Roll: 944 Page: 252). His occupation was farmer with land valued at $7,500. All the children were listed as born in NY and his son J M Bennett with his wife Harriet, Abner, and Frank lived next door.

In 1875 Peter C Bennett 69 b Saratoga and his wife Clarissa 66 b Vermont are living in the Town of Clayton, Jefferson Co, NY next door to Lyman and Lena Bennett and on one side and John and Harriet Bennett,and then Warren Dye and Rose Ellen, on the other side ( New York, State Census, 1875 [database on-line].
