Son of Archelaus & Hannah (Hastings)Stevens. Married Oct 4, 1818 Miss Achsa Floyd Smith. They settled in the Village of Attica July 1821. Alden was a distinguished educator and civic leader. In 1830 he was elected Sheriff of the old county of Genesee and subsequently was Judge of the Court of Common Pleas. During the 1830s & early 1840s, he was one of the prime movers in obtaining a charter for a railroad between Attica & Buffalo & worked tirelessly to bring the Tonwanda line in from Batavia to Attica. In 1837 he served as Sargeant-at-Arms of the NYS Assembly where he introduced various bills relating to the railroad system in NYS & education of not only students but teachers as well. He also promoted banking in Western New York & was successful in obtaining the charter for the Bank of Attica which played a significant part not only in Attica but also the City of Buffalo. In 1842 the first locomotive arrived in the village & his dream of connecting Albany to Buffalo via Attica was fulfilled in 1843. Being an educator Judge Stevens also was a crusader for better education in the state & his own village. When Wyoming County was formed in 1841 he filled the office of Superintendent of Wyoming County Schools. His teacher's training institute held in 1843 was the 2nd such meeting held in the U.S. For 12 yrs he was President of the old Attica Collegiate Institute. In 1857 Judge Stevens was appointed by Presdent James Buchanan as enumerator of the American Indian population in the State of Kansas. Judge Stevens foresight and perseverence in education & civic duties made the Village of Attica a prosperous railroad & educational center for many, many years.
