Hilma was born in Ottum, Sweden. Her parents arranged her marriage with Gustaf Alexander Johansson. Gustaf dropped the Johansson name and took his middle name as his last name. She came to America and went though Ellis Island, NY. She married Gustaf and they had 11 children. Seven children survived, two died at a young age and she had two miscarriages. Her children fondly called her "Ma". Times were tough and she did her best to raise her children in Chicago, Illinois. Her husband, Gustaf, purchased a sofa frame business. The business was called Alexander Parlor Frame. APF as we called it, was located on Western Avenue, Chicago Illinois. During WWII three of her sons were in the military. Her son Max was in the Army. Leo, my dad, was in the Army Air Corp. Leo was station in Colorado and Arizona. Her youngest son, Ned, was an officer in the Navy. She was very proud of them. Hilma lived more than 53 years on 53rd street in Chicago. Hilma had diabetes and she lost both of her legs to the disease. She live at Peace Memorial Nursing Facility,in Evergreen Park, Illinois until God called her home. She was loved by all. Rest in Peace Ma and Grandma.
